Since its foundation in 2005, the vocal ensemble Il Canto di Orfeo has established itself as one of the most prestigious ensembles in the Early Music scene.
Under the leadership of Gianluca Capuano, musicological rigour and artistic passion contribute significantly to the rediscovery and enhancement of the Baroque musical heritage and beyond.
Maestro Capuano’s profound knowledge of the polyphonic repertoire and originality guide the ensemble in performances that combine attention to philology and expressive vivacity. His stable collaboration with world-renowned artists, foremost among them Cecilia Bartoli, has further enriched the ensemble’s artistic profile.
ICO’s versatility is also evident in its approach to the contemporary and operatic repertoire: the ensemble performed the premieres of Fabio Vacchi’s Teneke (2007), Alexander Raskatov’s Cuore di cane (2013) and Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten (2015) at La Scala in Milan.
Between 2022 and 2024, Il Canto di Orfeo took part in two tours with Les Musiciens du Prince of Monte-Carlo, bringing Mozart’s opera La Clemenza di Tito with Cecilia Bartoli in the role of Sextus and Gluck’s Orpheus and Eurydice to Europe’s most important theatres, garnering great acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
Highlights of 2025 will see the ensemble engaged in the Monte-Carlo Opera season, with Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin and a world premiere by Bruno Mantovani.
The ensemble will also return to the Salzburger Festspiele with a Vivaldi pastiche in scenic form staged by Barry Kosky, Monteverdi’s Vespers and Mozart’s glorious Mass in C minor. The ensemble will once again join Cecilia Bartoli, Melissa Petit and Les Musiciens du Prince for the opening of the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona 2025.
